Supporting Math Teachers and Empowering Students to Have a Strong Foundation in Math

Impact

Affectionately known as “Ms. Sunshine” in the schools she supports, Johnette has facilitated professional development and student-centered instructional coaching support for teachers, instructional coaches and administrators in schools in Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas, impacting tens of thousands of students. She has served as an LSU adjunct instructor for four Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Projects in the Avoyelles/Rapides, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson and Washington Parishes.  In order to share best practices and research-based strategies with colleagues she has presented at many local, state, regional and national conferences, including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Regional and Annual Meetings.

One career highlight was serving as coordinator of the Singapore Math® Project in the City of Baker Schools 2008-2012.  This project was a major collaborative initiative with the school system, Louisiana State University, Southern University, Yale University, mathematicians, graduate students, teachers, parents, the local community and students. After year 3 of intense on-going teacher professional development and implementation of the highly-rated Singapore Math Curriculum, students in third grade had state test scores that were a 90% increase as compared to the previous year’s third graders who had not been a part of this project.  Johnette and her husband were guests of Singapore’s Ministry of Education in August 2016 and visited a school to see these best practices in action.
